Massage Doula
Being
a "Massage Doula" is one of the most rewarding things I have ever
experienced. A massage
doula, is a licensed massage (or certified; depending where you
practice) therapist who is also certified as a labor doula. I perform
massage therapy during the pregnancy, doula support during childbirth,
and postpartum massage after the baby is born. The Greek definition of a
"Doula" is: a person who provides assistance to a woman during
childbirth in three specific areas,1) emotional support, 2)physical
comfort, and 3)information.
I need to assure you that in no uncertain terms does a massage doula
diminish the fathers role.
What does a Doula do?
It has been coined that the fathers take the front
side of mom, face to face, holding hands, and giving her emotional
support. While I am on the
backside of mom relieving any back pain and tension between
contractions. The goal is to
keep mom relaxed and comfortable between contractions, so she is
mentally and physically ready for the next step.
Or if the couple prefers; I can be the support person for mom
that breathes with her and keeps her calm and on track.
A doulas job will vary because each set of parents hire a doula
for different reasons. For
example moms may want a doula because they know that their partners
won't do well watching her go through the physical pain.
Dads may want a Doula because he wants his wife to have the most
pleasant experience possible while giving birth.
Benefits of Labor Support
Shortens the length of labor - studies were
preformed, and the following was found:

= 7.7 hours
-
Study #3 - No doula = 9.4 hours.
With a doula = 7.4 hours
*Increases your odds of natural child birth by 55%
*Decreases requests for epidurals from 55 % without
a doula, to 8% with a doula

without a doula, to17% with a doula

I will provide information and exercises for the
parents to do together to allow the pushing stage to go more smoothly
and effectively.
Massage Doula is a specialized part of my work that
I learned through continuing education.
This includes prenatal massage, labor and birthing massage, and
post partum massage. I truly
believe that my experiences of these new babies being born, is also a
gift that affects my world as well as my clients.
I can't think of a neater occupation to have.
